New information kit teaches young women to be smart about money

Encouraging young women to understand they face special financial challenges is the goal of a new information kit introduced today by Julie Bettney, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women.

Speaking to students at O'Donel High School in Mount Pearl, Minister Bettney said, "Young people have to be aware that financial decisions they make today can have a direct influence on their future. It is especially important for young women to realize they have additional challenges in our labour force."

The Money Smarts for Young Women Kit was inspired by research that indicated many women do not recognize the challenges they face in terms of securing a sound financial future, and that there is an information and education gap in raising awareness about the need for women to take greater control of their personal financial situations.

The information kit explores myths and realities about money management, identifying the special financial challenges women face and providing basic financial planning information. The kit contains a guide to more detailed information resources including banks, credit unions and trust companies.

The Money Smarts Program also includes a learning resource for teachers and community educators. Using case studies, the learning resource provides students with an opportunity to make the link between life choices and financial security. It is designed for use in secondary schools and community centre settings.

"Money Smarts will give our youth practical education tools to help them plan for a secure economic future," said Minister Bettney. "The program teaches young people, especially young women, that financial security is not only based on a good education and smart career choices, but also on day to day financial responsibility."

The materials were developed in consultation with young women, educators and financial planners. Information kits were distributed to students in attendance at today's event.
