Mediator's Interim Report - Fogo Island Hospital

Joan Marie Aylward, Minister of Health and Community Services, today confirmed government's commitment to constructing a new health facility on the island of Fogo. The minister made the announcement following a review the findings of an interim report by mediator Wayne Thistle Q.C. and further consultation with the Central East Health Care Institutions Board. Mr. Thistle visited the island this month and met with various stakeholders regarding the location of a planned new health facility for the area.

The minister also announced that a more detailed engineering study will be necessary and undertaken in the new year to ensure all facts are available. The minister said she expected the final report of the mediator as soon as possible in the new year. In the interim the mediator will keep all parties informed of the evaluation process and the results of his findings.

The minister said: "We are committed to constructing a new health facility for the people of Fogo Island and we will do so based on evidence we will receive from the commissioning of this upcoming study." She added that it is the responsibility of government to consider the views of all residents and all the various issues. She said the final decision will be made in the best interest of the health care needs of the people of Fogo Island and within government's limited fiscal capacity.
