John Gray Centre officially opened

The John M. Gray Centre in St. Anthony was officially opened today by Chris Decker, Minister of Justice and MHA - Straits and White Bay North. The $8.6 million long term care facility replaced the St. Anthony Inter Faith Home which was assembled from a series of prefabricated trailer units. The new facility was named after Dr. John Gray who spent 25 years caring for the elderly in the St. Anthony area.

"Government's commitment to seniors is being demonstrated in many ways throughout the province," said Minister Decker. "Whether it's the construction of a new long term care facility like this one in St. Anthony, the global launch of the International Year of Older Persons by Minister Joan Marie Aylward earlier this month, or the new Seniors' Care Program which was announced this week, government will continue to work with seniors to meet their needs."

Minister Decker also noted that the naming of the centre after Dr. Gray was fitting. "Dr. Gray spent many years caring for the elderly in this community and through his example, today there is a lot of public involvement to ensure the elderly residents remain valuable members of our community."

The new centre was constructed adjacent to the Curtis Memorial Hospital and designed like a residential neighbourhood. The exterior walls and entrance ways of the resident rooms give the appearance of houses on a street. The rooms are located on two floors and are designed to care for persons needing high levels of nursing care.
