Alternate Health Care Model planned Joan Marie Aylward, Minister of Health and Community Services, announced today that an alternate health care delivery model is being planned for the Bonavista/Clarenville area. The proposal calls for a three year pilot project which over the course of the three years will introduce a broader concept of integration with other health care providers with expanded roles. The model is intended to foster improved scope and quality of health services, enhancement of quality of life for physicians, and a practice environment which focuses upon efficiency and effectiveness through the use of nurse practitioners, research, teaching and technology. "The general/family practice physicians, jointly with the Peninsulas Health Care Corporation, have presented me with an exciting proposal which we will be exploring in cooperation with the representatives and the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association (NLMA)," said the minister. "I commend the physicians in the Bonavista/Clarenville area for their vision, leadership, and the spirit of cooperation which led to their proposal. I want to thank the board for the courage to accept a new challenge and the NLMA for its interest and cooperation in this venture." A government committee has been established to work with physicians and details will be jointly developed by the Department of Health and Community Services, the NLMA, the Peninsulas Health Care Corporation, the Eastern Newfoundland Regional Health and Community Services Board, and the physicians in the area. These parties met last weekend to begin the process. The minister said she hoped the project would be the beginning of many similar initiatives and that this kind of partnership could be developed among all health care providers in order to deliver the best possible health care to the people of the province.
