Heart Health for Life - a Five Part Series Focusing on Heart Health

Joan Marie Aylward, Minister of Health and Community Services, is pleased to announce on behalf of the Newfoundland and Labrador Heart Health Program, a five part television series developed by the Heart Health Coalition of the St. John's Region. Heart Health for Life will air Wednesday evenings at 9:30 from August 26 to September 23 on the local Cable 9 station.

The show takes viewers through four key messages essential for maintaining a heart healthy lifestyle. Segments will deal with Healthy Eating, Being Smoke-Free, Active Living and Maintaining a Healthy Blood Pressure. The series will begin with an introduction to the Heart Health Coalition.

Six coalitions have been established throughout the province each representing a different area including St. John's, Eastern, Central, Western, Northern and Labrador. These groups each consist of a representative from the Health and Community Services office in their area and volunteers from the community and various community groups in the region that hold common interests in heart health.

"Each coalition strives to meet one common goal which is to stimulate heart health activity in an effort to reduce people's risk for heart disease. Examples of these activities include walking clubs and lifestyle clinics, within their region. I am very pleased that the St. John's region has been able to develop this series. We are hoping that Heart Health for Life will increase awareness of the coalition's efforts and encourage the public to improve their lifestyles by becoming more involved in community activities," said Minister Aylward. "The participation and improved knowledge of community members is vital to a healthy, happy community."

Guests of Heart Health for Life include Linda Carter, Margie Coombs, Art Miller, Carla Lawrence, Donna Best and Beth Ryan.
