Joan Marie Aylward, Minister of Health and Community Services announced today plans to form a provincial physician recruitment coordinating committee. The group will act as an advisory committee to the minister on matters related to physician recruitment and retention. The membership of the committee will include the deputy minister of Health and Community Services as the chair and will have representation from the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association (NLMA), the Medical Student Society, the Newfoundland and Labrador Health Care Association, the Newfoundland Medical Board, the Professional Association of Interns and Residents the MUN Medical School, active rural physicians, and the provincial government. "I am very pleased with the formation of this new committee as it will provide government with a more coordinated approach to the recruitment and retention of physicians throughout the province," said the minister. "This committee can have a very positive effect by recognizing the potential of our own medical graduates and respecting the experience and skill of physicians in other parts of the world." The committee, which will meet for the first time on July 10, will look at recruiting recent graduates of Memorial University as well as physicians from all over the world. The group will monitor the ongoing physician recruitment needs of each region in order to identify areas of most need. Minister Aylward said: "This type of partnership provides the chance to enhance our recruitment initiative and focus even more on a proactive and continuous effort to help meet the needs of our citizens. It is our hope that this committee can provide some insight into the province's recruitment needs and practices so that we can continue to enhance quality care and service delivery through successful recruitment and retention of physicians."
