Seniors' Month Proclamation

Joan Marie Aylward, Minister of Health and Community Services, attended a gathering of seniors today and proclaimed June as Seniors' Month in Newfoundland and Labrador. The minister commended seniors for their contribution to the province over the years and for the leadership they continue to provide for our youth.

"Government is committed to working with seniors to identify their needs and provide the best possible services to meet their needs," said the minister. "Through the creation of the new department of Health and Community Services we will be developing a Seniors' Secretariat to bring services in line with the Population Health approach to health care. We are also pleased that our Heart Health program and the recently announced Provincial Housing Repair Program will be beneficial to the health and well being of seniors throughout the province."

The minister said she wants the department to increase its direct consultation with seniors to stay abreast of current issues. Representatives of several provincial seniors' groups attended the proclamation ceremony where the minister said she was considering the establishment of a provincial Seniors Advisory Council.

The minister said Seniors' Month will become an annual declaration in this province, with the first Sunday in June being declared Seniors' Day. She said she will soon be announcing details of the participation of the province in the celebration of the International Year of Older Persons during 1999. The minister said the celebrations will coincide with others throughout the country and the rest of the world and will be driven by seniors and communities.
