Update on Outbreak of Salmonella Food Poisoning

The Department of Health advises the public that testing is in progress on over 200 food samples and more are being collected in an effort to determine the cause of now 22 cases of Salmonella food poisoning in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The 200 samples were chosen based on the food histories taken and the age of the individuals who have come down with Salmonella. The testing is focused on pre-packaged processed lunch packs commonly eaten by children.

Within 24-48 hours more information will be available on the results of the testing.

The department has been in contact with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and it is our understanding that similar testing of similar food products is being done in Nova Scotia and Ontario.

The provincial Department of Health officials have been in contact with health officials in these other provinces.
