$300,000 for Transition House on Burin Peninsula

Joan Marie Aylward, Minister of Health, is pleased to announce the approval of $300,000 for a transition house on the Burin Peninsula.

Funds approved for the facility will enable the Burin Peninsula Community Enrichment Committee to begin development during 1998-99. The facility will provide a safe environment where women and children who experience domestic violence can receive appropriate counseling and related services.

The minister said, "The new shelter will provide a safe haven for those in need. The establishment on the Burin Peninsula will ensure that women and children receive proper service close to their home communities, with less disruption in their lives."

Currently the closest shelter to the Burin Peninsula is located in St. John's. The new facility will assure better access to needed services and understanding. A safe shelter, counseling, and referral services will be available to battered women and their children in the area.

Presently the six shelters within the province are located in St. John's, Gander, Corner Brook, Nain, Labrador City-Wabush and Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
