$126,000 for the Nain Safe House

Joan Marie Aylward, Minister of Health, is pleased to announce the approval of $126,000 in funding fund for the transition house in Nain.

The shelter is currently being operated completely by volunteers. This funding will allow for paid staff and will cut down on travel to Goose Bay's transition house. The facility will continue to provide a safe environment where women and children can receive necessary counseling and related services.

The minister said, "This shelter is an important facility for battered women and children. It acts as a safe haven for those in danger and provides support in time of difficulty. This funding will allow the house to remain open, operating with paid staff." The Nain Women's Group will now run the facility.

This approval of funding will assure local access to needed services. The necessary safe shelter, counseling, and referral services will remain in place for battered women and children in the area.

The Safe House officially opened in November 1996. From November 1996 to November 1997, over 80 women and 30 children have lived at the house for varying lengths of time.
