High school driver testing program

Driver examiners will visit high schools again this year to conduct driver examinations and take driver photos.

Ernie McLean, Minister of Government Services and Lands, said today that the motor registration division of his department began this program last year and that it has proven to be extremely successful.

During the fall and winter of 1997-98, driver examiners traveled to most of the province's high schools. Students who were to be 17 years of age by the end of the school year were permitted to write their written test, complete vision testing and have their photos taken.

When the students turned 17 years of age, they could pick up their permits at the school and pay the applicable fees at any financial institution.

Mr. McLean said: "Last year, because of this program, more than 2,000 students did not have to take time out from school to travel to driver examination offices.

"School administrators and teachers appreciate this service since it results in less class disruption. Parents are pleased because they don't have to take time off from work to drive their sons and daughters to examination offices."

This year, emphasis will be placed on presenting information to novice drivers on the new graduated driver licence program to be implemented on January 1, 1999.

During the next few weeks, motor registration officials will contact schools throughout the province to make the necessary arrangements for this year's visits.
