Government Services and Lands to lead review of Select Committee's Insurance Report

Ernie McLean, Minister of Government Services and Lands, today, on behalf of government, expressed thanks to the members of the Select Committee on Property and Casualty Insurance for the excellent work they did in reviewing the insurance industry in this province.

Mr. McLean said: "As the chair of the committee says in his report, this is a diverse document which reviews a diverse industry. The committee has consulted widely. Its comprehensive report and recommendations cover a wide range of subjects of interest to consumers, the insurance industry, the legal profession, the medical profession, police forces, and municipalities.

"Because the Office of the Superintendent of Insurance is housed in the Department of Government Services and Lands, my department is now leading government's review of this report and it will make recommendations as to what government's next steps should be. We intend to have this review completed as quickly as possible.

"One of the reasons this committee was struck was to respond to consumer concerns with respect to the cost of automobile insurance. As we review this report, one of our key goals will be to identify measures to reduce these rates."
