Consumer Alert: Scratch n' Win Sweepstakes

The Department of Government Services and Lands advises consumers to check out the facts before responding to a poker sweepstakes offer currently being delivered to households in the province.

Carol Furlong, supervisor of trade practices, says a scratch and win card is now being delivered by mail, with an offer of prizes for a winning hand. Consumers with a winning poker hand have to call a 1-900 number.

"Consumers must pay to place such a call, and should be extremely cautious about these contests," said Ms. Furlong. "Requiring you to call a 1-900 number is how the operators make money. The longer you are on the line, the more it costs, and the more money these dealers make. This offer will likely cost consumers in excess of $20."

She advises consumers to contact a consumer affairs officer at (709) 729-2600 before responding to any such offers.
