Kilbride dairy farm wins award of excellence

Glenview Farm, owned by the Walsh Brothers in Kilbride, has won the 1997 Daphne Taylor Milk Quality Award of Excellence. This award is in recognition of Daphne Taylor who was a very active volunteer in the agriculture industry, particularly dairy farming. She passed away in 1996.  The provincial Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, in partnership with the Newfoundland and Labrador Milk Marketing Board, Central Dairies and Brookfield Dairy Group, and the dairy producers, support this award to promote high quality dairy products in our province.

The Daphne Taylor Milk Quality Award of Excellence is based on the health of the herd, equipment maintenance, milk cleanliness, appearance of the cows, barns and general landscaping. All dairy producers are eligible, as they collect points for specific criteria over the full year. There are three winners who received the 1997 awards. Second prize was awarded to Clifford Pelley of Harcourt Dairy Farm and the third prize was awarded to Art Gill of Glenfair Farms in the Woodale area.

On average, Newfoundland dairy farms are among the largest in Canada. Indeed the average number of cows on Newfoundland farms (83), exceeds the North American average of 50 cows. Dairy farming is the largest agricultural sector in Newfoundland and Labrador. A dairy cow in Newfoundland can produce as much as 23 litres of milk per day or 7,000 litres per year.

Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, Kevin Aylward visited Glenview Farms in early September. He meet with Dave, Wayne and Robert Walsh to deliver the Daphne Taylor Award of Excellence. He was joined by representatives of Central Dairies, Brookfield Dairy Group, and the Newfoundland and Labrador Milk Marketing Board. Mr. Aylward stated: "With the continous growth of the dairy industry in our province, and the determination of our farmers to meet high standards, we will continue to meet the market demand for high quality dairy products. Through these initiatives and new cooperative programs like the Agriculture Awareness Campaign recently launched in television and radio, the public will become more aware of these high standards."
