Minister pleased with multi-year agreement

Forest Resources and Agrifoods Minister, Kevin Aylward, is pleased with the announcement today that Corner Brook Pulp and Paper and A.L. Stuckless and Sons Lumber have reached a $150 million multi-year agreement to exchange sawlogs for pulp chips.

The two companies have reached a 10 year agreement that will provide the A.L. Stuckless sawmill in Glenwood with a long term supply of logs. In exchange, Corner Brook Pulp and Paper will receive pulp chips for their operation.

"The timber for chips exchange is one of the best examples of proper forest management practices for the future," Aylward said. "This operation increases the utilization of the raw resource by using more of the tree."

The logs enter the integrated sawmill and after they have been cut, the by-product is manufactured into chips and brought to the pulp and paper mill for pulpwood production. This practice is one of the many that the department is encouraging to help alleviate the wood supply deficit on the island.

"The assurance of a long term wood supply allows A.L. Stuckless to expand and modernize their operation in Glenwood. This will provide up to 55 new job opportunities, in addition to their existing 135 positions, in central Newfoundland," Aylward stated.

Aylward was present with Pete Mercer of Corner Brook Pulp and Paper and Neil Woolfrey of A.L. Stuckless. The announcement took place in St. John's this morning with a tour of the Glenwood operation in the afternoon.
