Temporary closure of black bear hunt in southern half of bear management area 6 from June 15-19, 1998

The Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, Kevin Aylward, announced today that he will amend the Open Season Big Game Black Bear Hunting and Snaring Order, Newfoundland, 1998, Newfoundland Regulation 12/98. This amendment will give authority to a temporary closure from June 15 to June 19, 1998 inclusive during the existing open season for hunting and snaring of black bears which will otherwise run from April 25, 1998 to June 27, 1998 inclusive. The closure will affect all that area enclosed within Black Bear Management Area 6 south of a straight line drawn at latitude 48 degrees 45' from approximately Broad Cove Point in Port Au Port Bay through the community of Spruce Brook to the Trans Canada Highway.

"This decision is based on safety concerns for the hunters during the MARCOT military exercise which will take place in the Stephenville area for this time period," stated the minister. "Most hunters who have purchased a bear hunting licence for the spring bear hunt in the area have already been contacted. We appreciate the cooperation of the public in this matter."

MARCOT Unified Spirit '98, the NATO training exercise currently underway in Stephenville, is the test ground for a number of technological demonstrations for the military. Ten countries and more than 15,000 people are involved in the United Nations exercise, including 4,000 which will land in Stephenville. The exercise began on June 3 and ends on June 20.
