(Forest Resources and Agrifoods)


Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods announced today that the Guide Use Regulations are in the process of being re-instated for 1998 without change from 1997. These regulations are contained within both the Wildlife Regulations, 1996 and the Guide Regulations, 1996 and stipulate the conditions under which guides are required for hunting and angling.

"At present, there are no changes to the previous regulations," stated Minister Aylward, "However changes may be made in the future after further evaluation by Cabinet of the recently completed report on guide regulations prepared by a committee of MHAs. Sufficient notice will be given if guide use regulations will be changed in the future."

The guide use provisions include the following:

Must use a guide or be accompanied by a direct relative in scheduled waters.

In unscheduled waters may fish unaccompanied within 800 m of a provincial highway.

Guide to client ratio 1:2

North of 52  North Latitude - Must use Outfitter except when accompanied by a direct relative, or is the guest of a co-op camp & be accompanied by a licensed guide, or may fish on scheduled waters within 800 m up or downstream of a bridge on a provincial highway if accompanied by a guide. May angle in unscheduled waters within 800 m of a provincial highway without the services of an outfitter, guide or without being accompanied by a direct relative.

South of 52  North Latitude - Must be accompanied by a licensed guide or direct relative on scheduled waters and any other waters more than 800 m from a provincial highway.

"All qualified guides should have received their 1998 guide license in the mail by now," stated Mr. Aylward, "If you have not received your licence please contact the nearest Forestry and Wildlife office."
