(Forest Resources and Agrifoods)

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods announced today that the third "Becoming an Outdoors Woman" (BOW) program is scheduled for May 22-24 at Lavrock on the Salmonier Line.

This program is open to women 18 years of age or older who would like to pursue outdoor activities, but feel they lack the necessary skills or knowledge. The workshop is designed to remove barriers to learning about the outdoors in a relaxed and supportive environment.

In 1997, two workshops were offered, one on the Avalon and one on the west coast. There will be 108 participants in May assisted by 30 volunteers. The second workshop for 1998 will be held in Happy Valley-Goose Bay on September 11-13.

One of the reasons for the success of the BOW program is the partnerships that have been created in the development of the program. The Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods is the primary sponsor and has received tremendous support from local businesses, organizations and volunteers. It is the community support that has allowed BOW to develop into the success that it is today.

During the BOW weekend a busy schedule is planned. "Participants have an opportunity to learn about shotgun/trapshooting, kayaking, canoeing, outdoor survival, map and compass, chainsaw safety, plant and bird identification, fly-fishing, spirituality and nature and archery, in addition to several other activities," said Minister Aylward. "The BOW program strives to teach comprehensive knowledge of all areas of outdoor life."

Registration cost is $135 and is all-inclusive. Scholarships are available for single mothers or students who may require financial assistance. These are donated by local organizations and businesses.
