(Forest Resources and Agrifoods)

Forest Resources and Agrifood Minister, Kevin Aylward commented today on the receipt of $1.25 million from the federal government for the Newfoundland and Labrador agriculture industry to help it adapt to the changes occurring in the agriculture and agrifood industry. Veteran's Affairs Minister, Fred Mifflin, on behalf of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Minister Lyle Vanclief presented the cheque to Harris Pippy of Newfoundland Grain Elevators Inc.

The cheque represents the first installment of $1.75 million to help the agriculture industry in the province. In total, Newfoundland and Labrador will receive $1.5 million for general adaptation purposes and $250,000 to help producers implement environmentally sustainable practices.

Minister Aylward said: "Over the past couple of years, industry has identified the establishment of a public grain storage facility or facilities as its top priority as a means to lowering feed costs and placing the agriculture industry in a strong, long-term competitive position."

The agriculture industry in Newfoundland and Labrador was valued at $72 million at the farm gate last year. However sales of manufactured food products have been estimated at approximately $350 million. There are over 740 farm units and in excess of 100 secondary processors, employing thousands of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, widely dispersed throughout the province.
