(Fisheries and Aquaculture)
Argentine fisheries delegation
in province, August 31 and September 1
A delegation of more than 30
representatives from the Argentine fisheries sector will be in St. John's
August 31 and September 1 as part of a mission to learn more about the
Canadian fishing industry.
The delegation includes
officials from the Argentine fishing industry, government, labour unions,
members of the scientific community, business represenatives and
journalists.
The purpose of the mission is to
learn from the Canadian experience on fisheries management, particularly in
the context of similarities between Argentina and Canada in this area. The
Argentine fishery for several species is in decline, spurring the country's
interest in exploring other fisheries management approaches, and in
particular the Canadian Quota Management System.
A two-day seminar has been
organized for the delegation at Hotel Newfoundland, beginning 8:30 a.m.
Monday with opening remarks by Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister John
Efford. The agenda for the seminar follows.
Following their sessions in St.
John's, the delegation will travel to Nova Scotia to continue its mission
for a further two days.
Contact: Argentine Embassy,
Ottawa (613) 236-2351.
