National Conference Highlights
Newfoundland and Labrador Aquaculture Industry

Aquaculture Canada '98 will provide an excellent opportunity for the Newfoundland and Labrador aquaculture industry to highlight its accomplishments and demonstrate its potential says Dr. Jay Parsons, President of the Aquaculture Association of Canada (AAC). "Aquaculture Canada is the AAC annual conference. We're expecting delegates from across North America, Europe and Asia. It's an ideal opportunity to raise awareness of the provincial aquaculture industry nationally and internationally."

"The conference is being held in conjunction with the Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association (NAIA)," explains Dr. Parsons. "The conference theme is Research: An Investment in Our Future. The sessions focus on practical solutions to impediments faced by the commercial aquaculture industry. Newfoundland and Labrador is on the cutting edge of applied aquaculture research so this is an opportunity to demonstrate our expertise. As well, we have several sessions planned which focus on the current status of the aquaculture industry in the province."

Aquaculture Canada '98 is a landmark event for aquaculture in Newfoundland and Labrador says Marc Kielley, NAIA Executive Director. "Although the conference has been held annually for the past 15 years, this is the first year it is co-hosted here. Speakers and delegates from around the world will discuss the latest technological, scientific and market developments in both shellfish and finfish aquaculture. This kind of exposure can create opportunities for investment and diversification within our province. It's an opportunity for local growers, suppliers and service providers to network on a national and international level."

The AAC has over 1000 members, comprised of aquaculture producers, suppliers, scientists, educators, students and government representatives. NAIA represents all segments of the provincial aquaculture industry in the province and has over 130 members.

Aquaculture Canada '98 is being held at the Delta Hotel in St. John's from May 31 to June 3.
