Report submitted on recreational fishing issues in Southern Labrador

Premier Brian Tobin today received the report of the task force on recreational fishing issues in Southern Labrador.

Chaired by Torngat Mountains MHA Wally Andersen, the task force was established by the premier in late 1996 to identify constraints and to advise government on how the recreational fishery on the south coast of Labrador could be improved for area residents.

"This has been a worthwhile endeavour that has not only provided us with valuable information for consultations with DFO, but it has also prompted changes within provincial regulations that benefit Labrador's recreational fishery," the premier said. "Last month, as a direct result of these consultations, the province announced that guiding regulations would be changed to enable licensed tourist establishments and independent guides in Labrador, to cater to non-resident anglers. As many of the recommendations deal with issues of federal jurisdiction, we will be sending the report to the minister of Fisheries and Oceans for review."

The premier noted this change was strongly advocated by a majority of presenters to the task force.

"Coupled with the presentations which have come forward during the recent Outdoor Resources Consultation Process, government now has some of the most comprehensive data on our outdoors ever collected," he said. "We will review all recommendations of the Andersen Task Force with a view to working with the federal government to enhance the benefits for local area residents and to develop the full potential of the Labrador recreational fishery."

Public consultations were held in May and June 1997 in L'Anse-au-Loup, Williams Harbour, St. Lewis, Mary's Harbour, Charlottetown, Port Hope Simpson, Cartwright, Black Tickle and Paradise River. An approximate total of 160 people attended the sessions.

Members of the task force were Wally Andersen, Chair; Delbert Pike, Manual Pardy, Margaret Burden, Jessie Bird and Ford Rumbolt.
