Members and chair appointed to Civic Centre Construction Board

Premier Brian Tobin, St. John's mayor Andy Wells, and Armand Agabab, chairman of the Avalon Convention and Visitors Bureau, today announced appointees to the Civic Centre Construction Board.

The province's appointees are: Peter Kennedy, secretary to Treasury Board, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador; St. John's businessman Harvey Short; Peggy Ann Coady, a chartered accountant and lecturer with Memorial University's Faculty of Business Administration; and Siobhan Coady past president of the St. John's Board of Trade and an officer with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

The city has appointed St. John's lawyer John McGrath; St. John's businessman Tom Collingwood; Ronald Penney, chief commissioner and city solicitor for the City of St. John's; and Art Cheeseman, professional engineer and associate commissioner and director of engineering and planning for the City of St. John's.

Appointees for the Avalon Convention and Visitors Bureau are Daniel Laliberte, general manager of the Delta St. John's Hotel and Convention Centre and Dick Cook, a former development consultant and architectural designer who is the owner of Winterholme Heritage Inn.

Mr. Kennedy has been appointed jointly by the province and the city to serve as the board's chairperson.

The Civic Centre Construction Board will be responsible for managing the construction phase of the project, ensuring that total construction costs do not exceed the $36 million budget. Any cost overruns will not be considered by the city or the province. The board will also have the authority to call and award tenders and enter into contracts and actions necessary for project completion.
