Premier announces appointment of senior officials

Premier Brian Tobin today announced the appointment of several senior government officials.

Bruce Hollett will become deputy minister of Industry, Trade and Technology (Acting). Mr. Hollett moves from the position of assistant deputy minister for the Voisey's Bay Project Secretariat; he will continue to work on the Voisey's Bay Project.

Brenda Caul will become assistant deputy minister - municipal support (acting) in the Department of Municipal and Provincial Affairs. Ms. Caul moves from the position of comptroller and chief financial officer with Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation.

Robert Young will assume the position of comptroller and chief financial officer with Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. Mr. Young's most recent position was that of assistant deputy minister - finance and administration for the Department of Education.

Ramona Cole will become assistant deputy minister - finance and administration with the Department of Education. Ms. Cole comes to this position from the position of assistant deputy minister - municipal support, Department of Municipal and Provincial Affairs.

Tim Murphy will become assistant deputy minister - Intergovernmental Affairs, Executive Council, a position in which he has been acting since March 1998.

BRUCE HOLLETT

Department of Industry, Trade and Technology

Bruce Hollett has worked with provincial government for 16 years. Most recently he served as the Assistant Deputy Minister for the Voisey's Bay Project Secretariat. Other positions have included assistant deputy minister of fiscal and tax policy, Department of Finance; director of social and fiscal policy, Intergovernmental Affairs Secretariat; director of fiscal policy, Department of Finance; and manager of fiscal planning and analysis for the Fiscal and Tax Policy Branch, Department of Finance. Mr. Hollett worked as a private consultant and industry analyst before coming to government. He holds a Masters of Business Administration from York University and a Bachelor of Commerce from Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Department of Municipal and Provincial Affairs

Brenda Caul has spent most of her career with Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, where she was comptroller for 17 years. In recent months she has held the position of comptroller and chief financial officer. Ms. Caul has worked as assistant comptroller with the corporation and also as a staff accountant with H.R. Doane and Company. Ms. Caul holds a chartered accountant professional designation, a Bachelor of Science from Memorial University of Newfoundland and has served as the secretary of the Newfoundland Chapter of the Treasury Managers Association.

ROBERT YOUNG
Appointed as
Comptroller and Chief Financial Officer
Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation.

Robert Young has worked in both federal and provincial government departments during his career as a public servant. His most recent position was assistant deputy minister, finance and administration, Department of Education. Some of the other positions he has held include: director of budgeting, Treasury Board Secretariat with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador; director, financial services and director, labour market programs, Employment and Immigration; director, regional programs, Department of Regional Industrial Expansion and director corporate services, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. Mr. Young holds a Masters of Business Administration from Dalhousie University and a Bachelor of Commerce from Memorial University of Newfoundland.

RAMONA COLE
Appointed as
Assistant Deputy Minister - Finance and Administration
Department of Education

Ramona Cole has worked with the provincial public service since 1982. Most recently Ms. Cole was the assistant deputy minister, municipal support, Department of Municipal and Provincial Affairs. Ms. Cole has worked in a variety of positions including director of financial and general operations, Department of Works, Services and Transportation; budget officer, Treasury Board Secretariat and senior policy officer, Senior Expenditure Review Committee, Executive Council. Prior to joining the Newfoundland Public Service, Ms. Cole worked as an auditor with both Revenue Canada and a St. John's chartered accounting firm. Ms. Cole holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland and a chartered accountant's designation.

TIM MURPHY
Appointed as
Assistant Deputy Minister - Intergovernmental Affairs
Executive Council

Timothy Murphy began his career with government as a program coordinator with the Department of Fisheries in 1987. Over the years he has held a number of positions, including: financial analyst, product development officer, and fisheries analyst/coordinator for the Department of Fisheries; analyst, director of regional development, director of resource and economic policy, and director of social and fiscal policy with Intergovernmental Affairs Secretariat. Mr. Murphy holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Memorial University of Newfoundland.
