Premier and MHA visit new tourism facility

Premier Brian Tobin and Charles Furey, MHA - St. Barbe, visited a Gros Morne resort today (July 28) during their trip to the Northern Peninsula. The new resort, owned by Alphonse Hutchings originally of Cow Head, will be a 52-unit, five-star facility. The resort will have banquet rooms to accommodate 500 to 700 people, and an indoor beach swimming pool. The facility will also include an 18-hole golf course and driving range and a 200-site recreational vehicle park with water and sewer hook ups.

Premier Tobin stated: "I was delighted to have the opportunity to tour this fine facility. The resort currently employs 30 people and will employ 70 to 100 people when fully operational. This will be an outstanding economic boost for the community of St. Pauls and surrounding areas."

Mr. Furey also expressed his enthusiasm for the new resort. "These types of economic initiatives by private citizens into their community are encouraging and signal a positive outlook for the future. This resort promises to be a world-class facility," said Furey.

The hotel portion of the resort is currently open to the public. Total money invested to date is approximately $4.5 million. The first nine holes of the golf course are scheduled to open next year, with the remaining nine holes scheduled for the year 2000.
