Premier offers condolences to the family of late Mayor Harry Baikie

Premier Brian Tobin today offered condolences to the family of the late Harry Baikie, Mayor of Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Mayor Baikie passed away this morning at his home in Happy Valley.

"Harry was a statesman, and a gentleman," said the premier. "Nationally and internationally, he represented his community, and all of Labrador, with great honour, strength of character and quiet dignity.

"During a decade of growth and change in Labrador, he was a steady, experienced hand on the rudder. He was, in every sense, a child of Labrador - he knew it well, and he served its cause with conviction. He was man of patience and gentle wisdom. Harry was also a good friend, and he will be greatly missed."

Mayor Baikie began his political career in 1969, as a town councillor. He served as deputy mayor from 1985 until 1989, when he began serving as mayor of Happy Valley-Goose Bay. His influence was felt throughout the province, with his representations on the Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro Board of Directors and the International Grenfell Foundation Board of Directors, amongst others.

"On behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, Jodean and I offer our deepest sympathy to Harry's family, especially to his children, Michelle and Greg," said Premier Tobin. "Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time."
