Government doubles committment to abuse awareness campaign

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is doubling its financial commitment to a major awareness campaign to prevent harassment and sexual abuse in provincial amateur sport.

Premier Brian Tobin made the announcement today at the St. John's Board of Trade weekly luncheon, which featured former NHL player Sheldon Kennedy as a special guest. Mr. Kennedy was in the city to launch his cross-Canada rollerblading quest to raise public awareness of abuse in society, and also to raise funds for the Anaphe Ranch for Victims of Abuse, to be built in British Columbia.

"Abuse is a problem which can only be eliminated when governments, community groups and community leaders like Sheldon Kennedy work together," the Premier said. "Only together can we help victims and their families heal and move forward with their lives."

The premier noted that government will commit $28,000, up from an original commitment of $14,000, to the National Educational Campaign on Screening Volunteers and Employees in Position of Trust with Children and Other Vulnerable People (NEC).

As well, the premier announced a contribution of $25,000 on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to Mr. Kennedy's cross-Canada abuse awareness campaign and Anaphe Ranch project.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, the NEC is being implemented by the Community Services Council, in alliance with the Newfoundland and Labrador Parks and Recreation Association, the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation, and the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Federation.

"As a volunteer organization, the Sheldon Kennedy Foundation demonstrates a true dedication to those who are most in need of our help," the premier said. "The bravery Sheldon demonstrated

by recounting his own experience has inspired countless Canadians, and his continuing efforts will benefit children, families and communities across this country."
