Lieutenant Governor Dr. A.M. House presented with honorary degree

His Honour The Lieutenant Governor, The Honourable A.M. House will receive an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree, honoris causa at Dalhousie University in Halifax on Thursday, May 21.

The citation from Dalhousie reads:

"Arthur House was born in Glovertown, Newfoundland. He studied at Memorial University College in St. John's and then came to Dalhousie in 1948 to study medicine. After graduation, he started a general practice in Baie Verte, Newfoundland. The experience of working in an isolated area influenced the rest of his career.

He trained at the Montreal Neurological Institute, returned to private practice in Newfoundland and was active in the development of neurological services in the province.

House played a significant role in the development of the faculty of Medicine at Memorial University and in health care in the province. In the late 1960s, he searched for ways to do remote medical consultations, transmit diagnostic information and deliver education courses using new technologies, leading to his greatest achievements in medicine and communication. Over 30 years, he developed the telemedicine program at Memorial which is recognized around the world. He shared his expertise with many international projects.

House has received numerous awards for his work, and in 1989, he became a Member of the Order of Canada.

In 1997, he was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador and continues his interest in information technology, literacy, child poverty and the development of the province's vibrant culture."

While in Halifax, Their Honours will be guests of The Honourable J. James Kinley, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, and Her Honour Mrs. Grace Kinley.
