Premier announces appointment of senior officials

Premier Brian Tobin today announced the appointment of two senior officials.

Effective today, Robert Smart will become deputy minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods. Mr. Smart replaces Hal Stanley who has been appointed as Chair and CEO of the Canada-Newfoundland Offshore Petroleum Board. Mr. Smart was previously Assistant Secretary to Treasury Board (Human Resources and Budgeting).

David Gale will become the new Assistant Secretary to Treasury Board (Human Resources and Budgeting), replacing Mr. Smart. Mr. Gale most recently served as Executive Director, Employee Relations, Treasury Board Secretariat.

Robert Smart began his career in government as an analyst with Treasury Board Secretariat. Over the last 20 years he has served in a number of positions including: Staff Relations Specialist; Director of Treasury Board Staff; Assistant Deputy Minister, Finance and Administration with the Department of Career Development and Advanced Studies; Assistant Deputy Minister, Finance; Administration and Planning with the Department of Education and Training; Assistant Secretary to Treasury Board, Human Resources; and most recently as Assistant Secretary to Treasury Board, Human Resources and Budgeting. Mr. Smart holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Memorial University of Newfoundland.

David Gale began his career in government in 1980 as a personnel technician/officer with the Classification and Pay Division of Treasury Board. Over the years, he has served in various posts including: Staff Relations Specialist with Treasury Board, and as Executive Director of the Provincial Information and Library Resources Board. His most recent position was that of Executive Director, Employee Relations, Treasury Board Secretariat. Mr. Gale holds a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Arts, both from Memorial University of Newfoundland.
