Premier Tobin expresses condolences to family of the late William Andersen

Premier Brian expressed condolences to the family of the late William Andersen of Makkovik. The man known affectionately as Uncle Bill, passed away last evening at the Melville Hospital in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

"Uncle Bill spent his life serving the people of Labrador and he will be sadly missed," noted Premier Tobin. "Through his founding of the Combined Councils of Labrador, and his dedication to the Inuit of Labrador, Uncle Bill demonstrated a keen understanding of the issues facing the people of Labrador. His efforts will be remembered and his dedication lives on through his children. Many of Bill's sons and daughters are leaders within their communities and are a true credit to their father's lifework."

William Andersen was a provincial wildlife officer, founder of the Combined Councils of Labrador, and he served as mayor of Makkovik. He is survived by his seven children; Toby, Chesley, Ivey, Junior, John, Fred and Marjorie.

"On behalf of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, I extend warmest sympathy to the Andersen family," said the Premier. "The loss of Uncle Bill will be felt by all who knew him."
