The following statement was issued today by Premier Brian Tobin. It was also read in the House of Assembly: Easter Sunday declared a provincial holiday Last December this legislature amended the Shops Closing Act. After several unsuccessful court challenges, government's inability to enforce the law as it previously existed was evident. We have now moved toward a self regulating retail sector, more in line with that of other Canadian provinces, thereby removing unnecessary government intervention in the marketplace. The amendment recognized that we live in a changing society with changing work patterns. At the time of these changes, government made a commitment to remain responsive to the needs of the public and monitor the new situation. We are doing so. Government has received a number of recommendations, including that of Reverend D.F. Harvey, Anglican Bishop of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador, expressing concern that Easter Sunday would not be a holiday under the Shops Closing Act this year. It has been suggested that Easter Sunday be treated similarly to Christmas Day and Good Friday, which are holidays under the act. I have discussed these concerns with my colleagues in Cabinet and I am pleased to announce that Easter Sunday has been designated as a holiday under section 4 (1) (b) of the Shops Closing Act.
