NewTel Information Solutions (NIS) Limited Meeting Commitments

"NewTel Information Solutions (NIS) Limited and its consortium partners have met, even exceeded, many of their commitments to government," says Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board Paul Dicks. "Their progress is evidenced, in part, by the fact that NIS has become the 8th largest systems integration company in Canada and the largest in Atlantic Canada."

In providing a progress report, Minister Dicks today outlined some of the ways in which (NIS) Limited is meeting benefit commitments to the provincial government.

The minister said NIS has reported to him that it has achieved or surpassed a number of its targets for March 31, 1998. Included among them are:

NEW TECHNOLOGY BUSINESS: $27.9 million was generated in new information technology business, exceeding NIS's original commitment of $18.9 million. Much of this additional work has been generated through Atlantic Canada operations.

JOB CREATION: One hundred and forty-six employees were hired since October 1994 resulting in 47 employees more than was agreed upon. In addition, NIS recently made 28 offers of employment to new graduates for work to begin in May 1998.

SUBCONTRACTING TO THE LOCAL IT COMMUNITY: NIS subcontracted $9.8 million in government and non-government work to the local information technology (IT) community, $600,000 in excess of its original $9.2 million commitment. This target was met ahead of schedule. Forty-one local IT firms have participated in 223 contracts.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTRE: NIS and Andersen Consulting have submitted a proposal including alternatives to government as a way of meeting its commitment of a research and development centre in the province.

:The privatization of Newfoundland and Labrador Computer Systems (NLCS) has been beneficial to the province," says Minister Dicks. "It has allowed the new company, NIS Limited, to service the IT needs of companies across Canada, the US and most recently Ireland."

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador privatized NLCS in October 1994 as a means of developing the information technology industry in the province.
