$1.6 million for Corner Brook Collector Road will benefit new Civic Centre

Premier Brian Tobin announced today that the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador will provide $1.6 million under the 1998/99 Municipal Capital Works Program for Phase II of the construction of a collector street from the university in Corner Brook to Elizabeth Street. The funding will supplement existing cost-shared funding of $270,000 from 1997 and will be used to provide for engineering, land acquisition, water, sewer and storm sewer, as well as paving including curb and gutter.

Phase I, at a cost of $300,000, was approved and spent in 1996 which tied the new Civic Centre into the existing road network.

"This new road will provide alternative access to the university complex, the Arts and Culture Centre, Rec-Plex, Herdman Collegiate, G.A. Mercer School, the new Forestry Building and the newly opened Civic Centre," said the premier. "The road will be complete in time for the Canada Winter Games which will take place in Corner Brook next year. Government is pleased to be able to support the city by establishing such infrastructure at a time when it is most needed."

The premier said the new collector road will also provide water and sewer servicing for future development in the area.

The official name of the collector street will be Grenfell Drive.
