Premier Brian Tobin Thanks Newfoundlanders and Labradorians Who Assisted in Central Canada Storm Efforts

Premier Brian Tobin is grateful to the many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who assisted fellow Canadians in need during the Quebec and Eastern Canada storm efforts.

"This was the worst natural disaster in Canadian history. I am proud of the people of this Province who unselfishly came to the rescue of other Canadians in time of need," said the Premier. "We have a renown reputation across the country for our caring nature. This is a perfect example of our generosity and a unique example of Canadians helping Canadians."

The charity of organizations has played an important part in the disaster relief. A number of companies and associations, including but not limited to, the Red Cross, the City of St. John's, NewTel Communications, Shopper's Drug Mart, Air Nova, Newfoundland Power, Newfoundland Hydro, Hotel Newfoundland and various banks have committed resources to assist fellow Canadians through this time of crisis. Together they raised thousands of dollars, sent volunteers to the mainland to help get the infrastructure back in place, offered their staff and equipment as required, and put together comfort packages and other items for those in need.

Community effort was also strengthened by the Newfoundland Composite Company and the 728 Communications Squadron who assisted with the relief effort. In addition to leaving their families on such short notice, the soldiers received support from employers such as Her Majesty's Penitentiary, Terra Nova Motors and the Marine Institute who provided time off and re-arranged shifts to accommodate deployment.

"The humanitarian nature of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians has undoubtedly helped to ease the hardship of fellow Canadians during the storm efforts," said Premier Tobin. "I would like to publicly thank all those who contributed in some meaningful way, including the small community groups who are too many to mention."
