January 8, 1998 (Executive Council)
The new Term 17, establishing a single school system for the children of Newfoundland and Labrador, has been signed into law in Ottawa. Taking part in today's proclamation signing at Rideau Hall were the Governor-General of Canada, the Right Honourable Romeo LeBlanc, the Right Honourable Jean Chretien, Prime Minister, and Premier Brian Tobin, on behalf of the province. During the ceremony Premier Tobin paid tribute to all members of the provincial legislature, the federal government and the Senate for respecting and honouring the wishes of the majority of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who, in last September's referendum, endorsed government's vision for a new single school system for the children of this province. "Finally, we can move forward to end the separation of our children along denominational lines, and create a new single school system where all of our children, regardless of their religion can attend the same schools," said Premier Tobin. "We must now concentrate on improving educational opportunities for our children. We have focused for far too long on the issues of governance, power and of control. It is time to direct all our energies, our imagination and commitment to providing the best possible education system available within our financial means to the children of Newfoundland and Labrador." "I once again call upon all our people, churches, interest groups and others to put the past behind us and make a sincere commitment to move on with meaningful education reform," concluded the Premier.
