Government pleased with funding for HMCS Cabot Naval Reserve Facility

Works, Services and Transportation Minister Lloyd Matthews, on behalf of Premier Brian Tobin, expressed his pleasure at the federal government's commitment today of $12 million for the HMCS Cabot Naval Reserve Facility. The funding was announced today in St. John's by Fred Mifflin, Minister of Veterans' Affairs.

"This new facility will increase the ability of naval reservists to do their jobs efficiently," said Mr. Matthews. "As well, by having DND, DFO and the Coast Guard along a contiguous site on the waterfront, they will be in a better position to share resources to enhance coastal defence, marine service, natural resource management and marine science operations. This facility is something the government has spent years lobbying for, and this reinforces the federal government's commitment to Newfoundland and Labrador. "

The new facility, which will replace the existing building in Pleasantville, will also be used by the Marine Institute for training purposes.

The total capital cost of the HMCS Cabot Project is approximately $16 million, and includes a $2 million boatshed constructed last year.
