January 5, 1998
(Executive Council)

The following is being distributed at the request of the Honourable A.M. House, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador on the Order of Canada Anniversary:

November 24, 1997 marked the 30th anniversary of the first investiture in the Order of Canada which is one of the most cherished symbols of national pride and identity. It is a constant reminder of the quality and humanity of Canadians and it reflects their true nature and character.

Thousands of people in Canada have received the Order of Canada from all sectors of society including artists, athletes, business people, educators, community workers and volunteers. They hold designations of either Companion, Officer or Member.

A total of 87 people in Newfoundland and Labrador have received the Order of Canada. The names of the majority of recipients are displayed in the main lobby of Confederation Building.

To mark the 30th anniversary of the Order of Canada, the Governor General has asked all Lieutenant Governors to promote the order in each province. Throughout 1998, I shall be hosting events in St. John's, Grand Falls-Windsor and Corner Brook for those who have received the Order of Canada.

I also encourage the people of this province to nominate deserving citizens for the Order of Canada. Nomination forms may be obtained by calling the Chancellery in Rideau Hall, 1-800-465-6890. All nominations will be judged by an Advisory Council in Ottawa.
