Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item. NEW UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:
The proponent proposes to construct an automobile shredding facility and metal salvage yard to process car bodies, white goods, and scrap metal on the Foxtrap Access Road east of the former CBS incinerator site. The facility will be located on a 10-acre site and will contain a 76m long by 15m wide car shredding plant with a two-storey operators tower, rotating crushing mill, cyclone dust collector system and a series of conveyors and stackers for the recycled metal and waste. The undertaking was registered on December 9, 1998, public comments are due on January 15, 1999 and the minister's decision is due on January 23, 1999.
This proposal is the same as above except the location is north of the former CBS incinerator site. The same deadlines apply.
The proponent plans to construct a rainbow trout fish out pond and rearing tanks at Winding Waters Park on Indian Brook, one kilometre west of Springdale on the TCH at the former Indian River Provincial Park. The pond will be 35 metres long by 43 metres wide with a total capacity of 2,487 cubic metres. Six rearing tanks will be constructed measuring 3.8 metres in diameter with a capacity of 13.4 cubic metres each. The primary water source for this facility will be Indian River with a secondary artesian well. The undertaking was registered on December 10, 1998, public comments are due on January 15, 1999 and the minister's decision is due on January 24, 1999.
The proponent plans to create an 87 kilometre extension to the East Coast Trail from Ferryland to Placentia to upgrade an existing trail system and create a continuous permanent hiking trail. Physical features of the undertaking will include boardwalks, stairs, and bridges, which will be installed at sites that may be degraded by overuse. Development activities will only occur outside the Avalon Wilderness Reserve. The undertaking was registered on December 9, 1998, public comments are due on January 15, 1999, and the minister's decision is due on January 23, 1999. UNDERTAKINGS RELEASED FROM ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT: The minister has decided that an Environmental Impact Statement is not required for the Portugal Cove/St. Philips Christmas Tree Farming. This project has been released from environmental assessment as per requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act.
