Environment Assessment Bulletin

Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item.

NEW UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

South Brook Spring Water Bottling Plant
Proponent: 10619 Newfoundland Inc.

The proponent proposes to construct a water bottling plant one kilometre west of the community of South Brook, Halls Bay, adjacent to the TCH. Water will be drawn from an existing spring and placed in bottles of one half litre to 18 litre size for sale to local and export markets. Water usage is estimated to be 30,000 litres per day. A one storey 7,500 square metre bottling plant will be constructed near the spring employing an ozone treatment process and including a 12,000 litre water storage tank. The undertaking was registered on November 24, 1998; public comments are due December 24, 1998; and the minister's decision is due on January 8, 1999.

EXEMPTION ORDER AMENDED:

Voisey's Bay Mine / Mill Development

The Voisey's Bay Mining Development Exemption Order has been amended under paragraph 37(1)(c) of the Environmental Assessment Act. This amendment clarifies that only those aspects of the assessment covered by the "M.O.U. on Environment Assessment of the Proposed Voisey's Bay Mining Development" are exempted from the act. The revised exemption order will be published in the Newfoundland Gazette on November 27, 1998. Copies can be obtained from the Queen's Printer.
