Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item.

NEW UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Pynn's Brook/Island Pond Forest Management District 15 (Amendment)
Proponent: Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited

The proponent proposes an amendment to the Five Year Operating Plan for District 15 in the Pynn's Brook/Island Pond area for additional timber harvesting covering an area of 4,124 Ha, including, 29 kilometres of new capital roads and 12 kilomerers of operational roads. This undertaking was registered on October 30, 1998 public comments are due on November 29, 1998 and the minister's decision is due on December 14, 1998.

Portugal Cove/St. Philips Christmas Tree Farming
Proponent: BMS International Real Estate Development Inc

The proponent proposes to develop a commercial Christmas tree farm on a three acre site in the Portugal Cove/St. Philips area on the north side of Goat Cove Brook and Old Broad Cove Road. Plans are to cut, clear and seed the forest over the next three years and have a commercial cut in approximately 10 years. The undertaking was registered on November 2, 1998, public comments are due on December 2, 1998 and the minister's decision is due on December 17, 1998.

Happy Valley-Goose Bay Christmas Tree Farm
Proponent: Blizzard Corporation Limited

The proponent proposes to develop a commercial Christmas tree farm on a 70 acre site approximately 11.5 kilometres from Happy Valley-Goose Bay, along the south side of the Trans Labrador Highway near the Churchill River. The undertaking was registered on November 2, 1998, public comments are due on December 2, 1998 and the minister's decision is due on December 17, 1998.

Robin Hood Bay Auto Shredding & Metal Salvage Yard (Resubmission)
Proponent: Municipal Recyclers Limited

The proponent proposes to construct an automobile shredding facility and metal salvage yard to process car bodies, white goods, and scrap metal on the north side of the Robin Hood Bay sanitary landfill in St. John's. The facility will be located on a 10 acre site and will contain a 76m long by 15m wide car shredding plant with a two story operators tower, rotating crushing mill, cyclone dust collector system and a series of conveyors and stackers for the recycled metal and waste. The undertaking was registered on November 3, 1998, public comments are due on December 3, 1998 and the minister's decision is due on December 18, 1998.

Robin Hood Bay Road Auto Shredding & Metal Salvage Yard
Proponent: Municipal Recyclers Limited

The proponent proposes to construct an automobile shredding facility and metal salvage yard to process car bodies, white goods, and scrap metal on the north side of Robin Hood Bay Road adjacent to the Robin Hood Bay sanitary landfill in St. John's. The facility will be located on a 10 acre site and will contain a 76m long by 15m wide car shredding plant with a two story operators tower, rotating crushing mill, cyclone dust collector system and a series of conveyors and stackers for the recycled metal and waste. The undertaking was registered on November 4, 1998, public comments are due on December 4, 1998 and the minister's decision is due on December 18, 1998.

Long Pond Auto Shredding and Metal Salvage Yard
Proponent: Municipal Recyclers Limited

The proponent proposes to set up an automobile shredding facility and metal salvage yard to process car bodies, white goods, and scrap metal at Long Pond, Manuels, on the north end of Talc Mines Road. The facility will be located on a eight acre site and will contain a 76m long by 15m wide car shredding plant with a two story operators tower, rotating crushing mill, cyclone dust collector system and a series of conveyors and stackers for the recycled metal and waste. The undertaking was registered on November 4, 1998, public comments are due on December 3, 1998 and the minister's decision is due on December 18, 1998.

UNDERTAKINGS RELEASED FROM ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT:

The minister has decided that an Environmental Impact Statement is not required for the Makinsons Salvage Yard (Amendment). This project has been released from environmental assessment as per requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act.
