Environmental assessment bulletin

Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item.

NEW UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

Roy's Knob Quartzite Quarry

Proponent: Shabogamo Mining and Exploration Ltd.

The proponent proposes to develop a quartzite quarry which includes; crushing, screening, trucking, stockpiling, conveying, washing, loading into rail cars and forwarding to SKW silica smelter in Quebec. The quarry is located on Roy's Knob approximately six kilometres from the town of Labrador City. The quartzite will be trucked to the Wabush Industrial Park. The access road to Roy's Knob will be upgraded. Construction is tentatively scheduled begin in October of 1998. The undertaking was registered on September 4, 1998, public comments are due on October 9, 1998 and the minister's decision is due on October 18, 1998.

UNDERTAKINGS RELEASED FROM ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT:

The minister has decided that an Environmental Impact Statement is not required for the

(1) Castor's River Forest Management - District 17 (Amendment)

(2) Copper Creek Snowmaking.

These projects have been released from environmental assessment as per requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act.
