Environmental assessment bulletin Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item. NEW UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:
The proponent has proposed a new access road to the Flat Bay Brook (Coal Brook) Gypsum Quarry. The proponent had previously registered an access road to the quarry on December 3, 1997. Due to the alignment with the TCH the road did not meet the provisions of the Protected Road Zoning Regulations. The new road will begin east of where Route 403 (Flat Bay Road) intersects the TCH. The road is located approximately 500 metres north of the original route. Construction is scheduled to begin as soon as the assessment process is complete. The undertaking was registered on August 26, 1998, public comments are due on September 27, 1998 and the minister's decision is due on October 10, 1998.
The proponent proposes to thin and prune existing balsam fir trees for eventual sale as Christmas trees. The site is located off the Bauline Line near the ball field (west of Torbay). The undertaking was registered on August 28, 1998, public comment is due on September 27, 1998 and the minister's decision is due on October 11, 1998.
The proponent proposes to construct an 8.2 kilometre access road from Boswarlos to the north end of Shoal Point on the Port au Port Peninsula for development of a petroleum exploration well. The bermed well site will be 175 metres long by 80 metres wide. The target bottom hole location under Port au Port Bay will be reached from the land site. Construction is proposed for early October 1998. The undertaking was registered on August 21, 1998; public comments must be received by September 25, 1998; and the minister's decision is due on October 5, 1998. UNDERTAKINGS RELEASED FROM ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT: The minister has decided that an Environmental Impact Statement is not required for the Chapel Arm Salvage Yard. This project has been released from environmental assessment as per requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act.
