Environmental sites assessments underway in Labrador

Environmental site assessments are underway at two former US military sites in Labrador. During the months of July, August and September, Agra Earth and Environmental Consultants, in association with Penashue Consultants will be conducting investigations and sampling activities at Northwest Point and Hopedale.

Environment and Labour Minister, Oliver Langdon, stated that these studies are necessary to define areas of pollution or potential pollution and to provide a technical basis for future decision-making. "This is an interim measure and a report with recommendations will be filed with my department in September," said Mr. Langdon. "This report and its findings will determine the extent and cost of future actions, including clean-ups which may be required in the short and long term."

"Community leaders have been contacted and briefed on activities under the contract," said Ernest McLean, Minister Responsible for Labrador. "The support of community leaders and residents is essential to provide background, knowledge and experience with respect to these former military stations."

Minister Langdon indicated as well that every effort is being made to ensure minimal disturbance to the environment and to the lives of local residents during the course of this work.
