Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour, or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item.

NEW UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

    Castor's River Forest Management District 17 (Amendment)
    Proponent: Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited

The proponent proposes an amendment to the Five Year Operating Plan for District 17 in the Squid Cove - Castor's River area for timber harvesting of insect damaged wood covering an area of 1,216 Ha including 10 km of new roads. The undertaking was registered on July 3; public comments must be received by August 7; and the minister's decision is due on August 17.

ENVIRONMENTAL PREVIEW REPORT REVISIONS

    Southwest River (Port Blandford) Small Hydroelectric Development
    Proponent: Frontier Hydro Group and Algonquin Power Corporation Inc.

The revised Environmental Preview Report dated June 1998 has been received by the department for government and public review. Public comments must be received by the minister on August 6 and the minister's decision is due on August 14.

DECISION DATE EXTENDED:

    Emiril Siding to Esker Road (Labrador) Snowmobile Trail
    Proponent: White Wolf Snowmobile Club, Labrador West

The original due date of the minister's decision on the review of the registration document has been extended with the proponents consent to fulfill additional information regarding the undertaking.

NO ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT REQUIRED:

The minister has decided that an Environmental Impact Statement is not required for the following undertakings:

(1) Buchans Barite Plant (Reactivation)

(2) Crabbes River Cottage Development Plan

(3) Blaketown Salvage Yard
