Rock blast at City Sand and Gravel pit being investigated

Minister of Environment and Labour, Oliver Langdon, stated today that there is a complete investigation ongoing into the events surrounding the blast that took place at the City Sand and Gravel Pit on Topsail Road, St. John's. The blast took place at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 3, 1998.

Minister Langdon said: "I want to ensure that every possible precaution was taken by the companies involved to ensure the safety of workers and residents in the area." The investigation will involve interviews with City Sand and Gravel Ltd. and NFLD Hard Rock Inc, the company contracted to conduct the blasting operation, as well as with residents of the area. In the meantime, the blaster with NFLD Hard Rock Inc has surrendered his blasting certificate to the Department of Environment and Labour pending the results of the investigation.

The Department of Environment and Labour's Mining Engineer and an Occupational Health and Safety Officer have commenced their investigation and a full report will be submitted to the minister.
