Environmental Assessment Bulletin Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item. NEW UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:
The proponent proposes to construct a 2,800 ft. road exiting west from Route 381, to access an existing cottage on the south side of Sunday Cove Island, near the Springdale area. The right-of-way for the road will utilize an existing turn-off and 60 feet of an old skidder road. The road will be maintained by the proponent but may benefit several cottage owners in the area. The undertaking was registered on June 17, 1998; public comments must be received by July 21, 1998; and the minister's decision is due on August 1, 1998.
The proposed undertaking consists of an insectarium, butterfly house, walking trails and interpretive displays. The insectarium would utilize an existing building that has been specially renovated. The display will feature preserved insects and arachnids from throughout the world and live specimens in 30-40 terrariums and aquariums. The butterfly house, a permanent greenhouse, will be added in 1999. Live exhibits will contain species native to Newfoundland, and tropical species approved by the federal Department of Agriculture and the provincial Wildlife Division. The development is proposed to be located on the Viking Trail in the municipality of Reidville. The project was registered on June 24, 1998; public comments must be received by July 24, 1998; and the minister's decision is due on August 7, 1998. DECISION DATE EXTENDED:
The due date of the minister's decision on the acceptability of the Environmental Impact Statement, as amended, is now July 17, 1998. The original date for the minister's decision was June 12, 1998. The extended time period will facilitate completion of the scientific and technical review of the document. NO ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT REQUIRED: The minister has decided that an Environmental Impact Statement is not required for the following undertakings:
