Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Awards presented

Oliver Langdon, Minister of Environment and Labour, along with Deris Hollett, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Women's Institutes, announced the 1997/98 winners of the Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Awards. The awards were presented last night at a ceremony held at the Quidi Vidi Rennies River Fluvarium in St. John's.

The awards are presented in seven categories: Individual; Citizen's Group or Organization; Educator; Youth; School; Business; and Municipality. The awards are presented each year to individuals and groups who demonstrate outstanding commitment and dedication to the protection and conservation of the Newfoundland and Labrador environment.

This year's winners include:

  1. Individual: Dr. Peter Scott

  2. Citizen's Group or Organization: Birch Brook Nordic Ski Club with an honourable mention to the Burgeo Bears

  3. Educator: Joan Vautier

  4. Youth: Sherrie Lamb

  5. School: Topsail Elementary School Naturalization Project with an honourable mention to Booth Memorial High School

  6. Business: 40 Shades Inc.

  7. Municipality: Town of Grand Falls-Windsor

Minister Langdon stated that the winners were chosen from a highly competitive field and encouraged each participant to be nominated again next year.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Awards Program is jointly sponsored between the Department of Environment and Labour and the Newfoundland and Labrador Women's Institutes. This is the ninth year for this program.
