Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the Regional Office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item.

NEW UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Port au Port Barite Mine
(Proponent: Pennecon Limited)

The proponent proposes to mine a deposit of barite/celestite that is in excess of 100,000 metric tons. The material is used in the production of drilling mud, and would be destined for market in the Atlantic Petroleum Industry. The deposit is located on Hooper's Brook at Boswarlos on the Port au Port Penninsula. Excavation during the summer of 1998 would require the temporary diversion of Hooper's Brook. Stream rehabilitation would be undertaken following mining completion in the Fall. The undertaking was registered on May 15, 1998; public comments must be received by June 20, 1998; and the minister's decision is due on July 5, 1998.
