Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item.

PROVINCE SUBMITS COMMENTS TO THE ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT PANEL IN RESPONSE TO THE VOISEY'S BAY MINE/MILL EIS REVIEW

The province has now completed its review and submitted comments to the Environmental Assessment Panel reviewing the Voisey's Bay Mine/Mill Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The panel invited the public, government agencies and technical specialists to review the EIS to determine whether it adequately addressed the guidelines by providing sufficient information to support meaningful discussion at public hearings. The pnel will announce its adequacy determination by May 1, 1998 on whether to proceed to public hearings or request additional information from the proponent. ENVIRONMENTAL PREVIEW REPORT REQUIRED:

Newfoundland Integrated Snowmobile Trail
Proponent: Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Snowmobilers

The minister has directed the proponent to prepare an Environmental Preview Report (EPR) to address data gaps in the registration document identified by the public and review agencies. Additional information is required on: construction activities and scheduling, operational activities, routing details and potential resource conflicts. A governmental Environmental Assessment Committee will be appointed to meet with the proponent to elaborate on these environmental concerns to be addressed in the EPR.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT ADDENDUM SUBMITTED:

Northwest River Power Development
Proponent: Genergy Inc.

The proponent has submitted an addendum to the EIS for the above noted undertaking. Anyone wishing to review the document and submit comments may do before May 25, 1998. The minister's decision on the acceptability of the EIS is due on June 12, 1998.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION PLAN APPROVED:

Long Harbour Phosphorous Plant Decommissioning
Proponent: Albright and Wilson Americas Limited

The 1998 activities Environmental Protection Plan (EPP) for the above noted undertaking was approved on April 3, 1998.

ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS MONITORING PROGRAM SUBMITTED:

Newfoundland Transshipment Terminal
Proponent: Newfoundland Transshipment Limited

The proponent has submitted the environmental effects monitoring program (EEM) for the above noted undertaking. Copies of the EEM are available from the Environmental Assessment Division, St. John's Office. Public comments should be received before April 24, 1998. The minister's decision on acceptance of the EEM is due on May 8, 1998.

NO ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT REQUIRED:

The minister has decided that an environmental impact statement is not required for the following undertakings which have recently been registered and examined by government and the public. The undertakings are released subject to other regulatory and permitting requirements.
