Environment Assessment Bulletin Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the Regional Office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item.
The proponent proposes to construct and operate a stock car/ATV and snowmobile race track behind the Southern Shore Arena in Witless Bay. The proposal will include an access road, parking lot, observation tower, stock racing track, on site portable chemical toilets, fencing and guard railing. The business will operate from May to October and construction is anticipated to commence this spring. The project was registered on February 25, 1998, public comments must be received by April 3, 1998 and the minister's decision is due on April 11, 1998.
The proponent proposes to import Alpacas to be used as breeding stock in Felix Cove on the Port au Port Peninsula. The operation will consist of a maximum of five animals to start and growing to approximately twelve animals within three to four years. A small barn will be constructed and cattle fencing will be installed. Construction is tentatively scheduled to commence this spring and is anticipated to be completed within four to six weeks. The project was registered on February 25, 1998, public comments must be received by April 3, 1998 and the minister's decision is due on April 11, 1998.
The minister has provided the proponent with the guidelines for the Terms of Reference (TOR) for the environmental impact statement and component studies for this undertaking. The proponent is required to prepare the TOR which will be made available for public and government review prior to ministerial approval.
